The great (not so much) debate

Happy Friday friends!

Today starts a new Kitty Meow blogging series called "Party Planning 101". (Don't worry...there will still Freebie Fridays giveaways on the first Friday of every month!) Party planning and fun little details are such a HUGE passion of mine. If it wasn't for the long hours that take up most of your weekends, I would absolutely be an event planner. Unfortunately, I don't have the patience or wherewithal for ALL THAT. I have a pretty cushy gig as a stationery designer in the convenience of my home office, working whenever I can get a free minute, in yoga pants and a messy bun.

As a stationery designer I get to work on all the beautiful little details that truly make an event special. THESE are the details that make or break a party and result in guests leaving feeling like a million bucks. Being a great hostess is all about making your guests REALLY feel welcome. If you love being the hostess with the mostest, then you're going to love what I have in store for the Party Planning 101 series.

In this week's lesson, I want to get back to basics. Every great event starts off with a beautiful piece of stationery - an invitation! Getting fun snail mail will brighten almost anyone's day. You check the mail, sift through bills and junk, then see an envelope that stands out from the others. You open it up to reveal what's inside! What happens next is either going to get you pretty jazzed up (enter singing angel choir here) or leave you feeling pretty lackluster (waaaaa waaaaa). An invitation sets the tone for your event. It can tell your guests that you're either serious about a good time or if your heart's only half way in it.

For as often as we buy and receive stationery...I'm always amazed at how often it's spelled incorrectly by the masses. Blame it on autocorrect or blame it simply not caring, but if you're reading this blog, you're a lover of pretty paper goods. Hopefully you care at least a little. When I saw this fabulous throw pillow from the lovely Elizabeth of Pomp Creative I knew I needed it in my life and my office. The perfect photo prop for a blog post!

I'm not pretending to be Miss Smarty Pants over here. Quite the opposite actually. When I first started off doing this whole invitation business thing, I designed my first Kitty Meow business card with my brand new logo. I was feeling pretty proud of myself, thank you very much! Like big kids do, I had a friend of mine proof read it for good measure. To my HORROR, this friend, who is not a designer, pointed out that I had "Curiously Slick StationAry Designer" printed on my business card. Yes, as a designer I sit very stationary at my computer screen all day long, but this wasn't the message I was trying to get across. I couldn't believe I was calling myself a stationery designer, charging people for my services, and couldn't even spell what I do correctly! Epic. KittyMeow. Fail.

Since then, it's become a huge pet peeve of mine when I see people write stationAry, instead of stationEry, when referring to invitations and such. I'm on a quest to politely ask that we all join together to use the correct form. Be smarter than Kitty Meow circa 2010. Stationary for when you're not moving; Stationery for paper goods. Knowledge is power. Spread the Kitty Meow love!
